Austria Jobless Rate Ticks Up to 7.1% in May


Austria’s unemployment rate in May 2026 inched up to 7.1%, compared with 7.0% in May 2025. The total number of unemployed persons increased by 5,536 year-on-year to 301,676. The unemployment rate among women rose by 0.3 percentage points to 7.0%, with the number of unemployed women up by 6,643 to 140,381. In contrast, the unemployment rate for men and other genders remained unchanged at 7.1%, with 161,295 individuals affected.

Dependent employment grew by 6,000 compared with a year earlier, reaching 3,967,000. Employment among women increased by 6,000 to 1,863,000, while employment among men and other genders held steady at 2,104,000. Including participants in training schemes, the combined total of unemployed persons and individuals enrolled in labour market programmes rose by 2,931 year-on-year to 378,278.
